The Artist Residencies are set in the 400-year-old cells of C-Wing, the former women’s Wing at Shepton Mallet Prison. Alongside 12 other female artists. I have been looking at the reason why women in the 1800s were incarcerated and how long their sentencing was.
Emma Rose 1869 Guilty of being drunk and riotous sentenced to 7days hard labour
Caroline Cage 1877 is Guilty of wilfully throwing herself into a moat with intent to kill and murder herself.
sentenced to 3 months hard labour at Shepton mallet prison.
Using this found painting (a print) I have collaged these female figures to show their crimes. This collage along with a series of other works can be seen within the prison cell at Shepton Mallet. This work is a digital collage that I have later added animation effects to.
